Taikyoku roughly means "universe," although the term is used in many different contexts, for example, for restaurants. It is open to speculation why the term was used for a series of basic Katas. From a physical perspective, the universe is ultimately made up of fundamental elements: on the one hand, atomic and subatomic particles, and on the other hand, clearly defined natural laws. And from these relatively few things, an infinite variety has arisen. Similarly, one can understand the Taikyoku Kata. Although it consists only of basic techniques, it contains the principles on which karate is built. In other words, to understand the complex, one must first learn the fundamentals. Taikyoku Mawashi Uke is an unexpected difficult Kata. It begins with Mawashi Uke in Neko Ashi Dachi and Teisho zuki. Then a combination of Yoko Empi, Uraken Uchi, Hariatoshi Uke (which seems to be a Gedan Barai) and Gyaku zuki will be done. This combination will be done 12 times and because of this the Kata has such a high number of movements. The Kata is very good for to increase the ability to perform a couple of movements automatically.

The Gekisai Kata were developed by Chojun Miyagi, the founder of Goju-Ryu.
