Meaning of the name Basic Kata Gedan Uke Moves: 21
Taikyoku roughly means "universe," although the term is used in many different contexts, for example, for restaurants. It is open to speculation why the term was used for a series of basic Katas. From a physical perspective, the universe is ultimately made up of fundamental elements: on the one hand, atomic and subatomic particles, and on the other hand, clearly defined natural laws. And from these relatively few things, an infinite variety has arisen. Similarly, one can understand the Taikyoku Kata. Although it consists only of basic techniques, it contains the principles on which karate is built. In other words, to understand the complex, one must first learn the fundamentals. Taikyoku Gedan is performed exclusively in Shiko Dachi and includes Gedan Barai and Oi tsuki.

Taikyoku Mawashi Uke is an unexpected difficult Kata. It begins with Mawashi Uke in Neko Ashi Dachi and Teisho zuki. Then a combination of Yoko Empi, Uraken Uchi, Hariatoshi Uke (which seems to be a Gedan Barai) and Gyaku zuki will be done. This combination will be done 12 times and because of this the Kata has such a high number of movements. The Kata is very good for to increase the ability to perform a couple of movements automatically.

The Gekisai Dai Ni differs from the Gekisai Dai Ichi only in a few passages. A Yoko Uke was replaced with three Kuri Uke, and at the end, instead of Yama zuki, Mawashi Uke is performed in Neko Ashi Dachi.

The Gekisai Kata were developed by Chojun Miyagi, the founder of Goju-Ryu. Although it is a simple Kata, it already contains challenging combinations and, with Shuto Uchi after Ashi Barai, an equally demanding technique. Since almost all techniques are performed both on the left and the right side, it is very suitable for an even training of both halves of the body.
